   ROCK SHOP SAFETY


~ Wear suitable eye protection when engaged in any activity where eye hazards may exist.
    
~ Be sure your clothes are safe and suitable for shop work. Remove or fasten any loose clothing,  keys, chains, aprons, shawls etc. Roll loose sleeves up above your elbows. Keep your hair tied back, away from any equipment while it is in operation.
    
~ Clean around your work area.

~ Keep-the floor clear of scraps and litter.

~ Immediately wipe up any liquids spilled on the floor.
    
~ Exercise care whenever you're in the shop -  Think Safety at All Times.  
   
~ Remember that what you're doing not only affects you but also the safety of everybody else in the shop too!

~ Caution anybody you see violating safety. 


SAFELY USE POWER EQUIPMENT  

~ Always obtain training before using any of the power equipment in the shop.

Oil Lubricated Saws:

1. Choose the right size saw to cut your stone.  Get help from the shop foreman if you have any questions about which saw to use.

2. Line up your cut then clamp the stone in place.  Check to make sure the stone is secure and snug so it will not move, pivot or fly out while cutting.  Don't over tighten the clamp(s).

3. Check to make sure that the belt(s) are seated properly in the pulley(s) and that the area around the saw, belt(s) and pulley(s) is unobstructed.

4. Always check the saw before turning on the power.  Rotate the blade, one revolution with a wooden stick, wedge or block.  Don't use your hand. 

The blade must spin freely and have no binding when you start the saw.  

5. Handle saws with care - don't abuse them!  Don't force or jam anything into the saw at any time.

Don't change the saw belts & pulleys - don't add weights. 

If you have any questions or concerns about what you're cutting or the saw, stop what you are doing and ask the shop foreman for help.

6. Report to the shop foreman, any equipment that does not seem to be working properly.


Water Lubricated Saws:

1. Make sure there's water in the saws before you make a cut.  Don't cut anything dry.

2. Check to make sure that the belt(s) are seated properly in the pulley(s) and that the area around the saw, belt(s) and pulley(s) is unobstructed.

3. Check the saw before turning on the power.  Rotate the blade, one revolution with a wooden stick, wedge or block.  Do not use your hand. 

Make sure that the blade spins freely when you start your cut.  

4. Handle saws with care AND don't abuse them!  Don't force or jam anything into the saw.


Water Lubricated Grinders:

  ~ Make sure that the grinder is unobstructed and clear before turning the power on.  Use a wooden stick, wedge or block to turn the wheel. Don't use your hand.  

Turn on the water, don't grind anything dry.

  ~ It is mandatory that you keep all machine safety guards on the machines in their correct
position.

  ~ Start your own grinder and remain with it until you have turned it off and it has come to a complete stop.

  ~  Be watchful of machines being operated by others and keep clear of them.

  ~ Keep your eyes on your work at all times while operating the power grinders.

   ~ Wait to clear scrap stock from a a grinder until it has come to a complete stop.

    
  ~ Stop whatever you are doing and get help from the shop foreman anytime, regarding anything, you may have questions about.
